Product Description

The Calitec Hot Water System uses heat pump technology to heat your water. It works the same way as an air conditioning unit or refrigerator. Ambient free energy from the atmosphere is captured and transferred into a refrigerant gas. The heat of this gas is released in the coil inside the cylinder where it heats up the water, any time of day or night, under all weather conditions.

The Calitec Hot Water System is a refrigerant cycling split system with an outdoor unit and a stainless steel hot water cylinder, which fits inside your standard hot water cupboard. You can also position it outside.

The "set and forget"  controller with timer function allows you to take advantage of low electricity tariff hours, or to match peak solar PV energy production to help maximise your savings.

The KP-50 outdoor unit has a heating output of 4 kW with a nominal power use of just over 1 kW. The coefficient of performance (COP) is 3.88 and uses R32 refrigerant. The heat pump will heat the water up to 60°C. The hot water cylinder can be placed either inside or outside. The wet back option can also be used as solar coil, with either a left or right side cylinder connection. The emergency electric back-up heater is 3 kW.

Technical and Environmental Benefits

  • May help contribute towards points in Homestar and Green Star NZ.
  • Heat pump water heaters can work in homes with minimal sun that are not suitable for solar hot water systems.
  • Double layer evaporator for better performance at lower temperatures.
  • 5 year warranty on the outdoor unit and 20 year warranty on the hot water cylinder.

Manufacturer and Supplier Information - CALITEC HOT WATER SYSTEMS Ltd.

Calitec is a proudly New Zealand owned and operated company, based in Whangarei, Northland.

After running a Northland HVAC business for many years, Calitec Hot Water Systems Ltd was established in 2017 by Peter and Gwen Ras, originally from the Netherlands. More than 13 years ago they moved with their family to Whangarei, Northland.

The company brings overseas technology here to New Zealand to help solve pain points for home owners, developers, architects and builders. Peter has extensive experience in the building and installation industry. Over the years, he has come to be a specialist in the field of heat pump technology and has a huge passion for the benefits of energy efficient solutions.

Application and Purpose

Domestic Hot Water Supply for residential application. The spit system design offers cost effective solution for indoor swap out of existing tanks or new builds with outdoor options available.

The purpose of Calitec’s NZ design is to provide a cost effective water heater that delivers at up to 70% financial saving when compared to a conventional electric water heater* (*Calculation based on families of 4 or more).

Installation and Maintenance

The installation of a Calitec Hot Water System is only allowed by qualified tradesmen. It must be installed according to New Zealand building codes and local regulations. Once your installer(s) are finished there is very little you have to do. It is recommended to place the outdoor unit in a location where:

  • It is not exposed to strong winds.
  • Airflow is good and dustless. At least 100mm space around the unit and 800mm space at the front.
  • Neighbours are not annoyed by the operating sound.
  • There is no risk of combustible gas leakage.
  • The condensation water can flow to a drain or can be absorbed into the soil.
  • Flooding water cannot reach the base of the unit.
  • The outdoor unit should stand on feet on a level base or fitted with a wall bracket.

Maintenance of outdoor unit - Keep it free from weeds and spider webs and don’t block it off in any other way. A restricted or blocked airflow can result in higher power consumption or failure of the unit. The compressor unit is fitted level to the ground. Your installer will make sure that it is fitted correctly, but check regularly to make sure that it remains level.

Hot water cylinder installation- The hot water cylinder can be used as a low water pressure cylinder or as a mains water pressure cylinder and can be placed either in or outside. If you install the hot water cylinder outside, make sure that you insulate the water pipes to avoid heat loss. The installation must be carried out by a qualified plumber and installed vertically, and according to local rules and regulations.

Hot water cylinder maintenance - Mains pressure systems are fitted with a Pressure & Temperature Relief Valve (PTR Valve) and once a month the release mechanism on the valve has to be activated to ensure it continues to function correctly. When the release mechanism is jammed, the hot water pressure in your system could become too high.
