Product Description

Kopine Flooring Systems - Ultralock™12 and Tongue & Groove12 - are made from high density particleboard designed to offer superior stiffness for maximum span capability and weather resistance up to 12 weeks during construction. Kopine Flooring Systems are cost effective, simple to lay and available in two jointing options. The fully glued joint can be walked on after two hours of installation.

Kopine Ultralock™12 is a unique patented system which uses fully glue bonded edges to form a continuous flooring membrane eliminating the need for nogs or dwangs under joints. The use of Gorilla Grip Express allows for multiple sheets of Kopine Ultralock™12 to form into a continuous panel, reducing the “squeaks, creaks and groans.” The glue bond also provides an effective seal against moisture into the sheet edges during construction. This significantly reduces edge peaking and the risk of a squeaky floor.

Kopine Tongue and Groove is a more traditional tongue and groove method of jointing but uses a glue bond in addition to the black PVC tongue to produce a strong joint which significantly reduces edge peaking compared to the traditional glueless systems.

Kopine also offers medium density particleboard panels in standard 2440 x 1220mm sheet size, as an ideal substrate for laminate and veneer finishes and for furniture and shelving.

Manufacturer Information - NZ Panels Group

NZ Panels Group is arguably now the biggest supplier of interior panels and products to the New Zealand joinery and building industry with eight product brands in addition to Prime Panels. Brands include Prime Panels, Bestwood, Dezignatek, Mercer, Ultraglaze, Wilsonart, Durasein, Acero and Kopine.   With four manufacturing sites across New Zealand – in Auckland, Kopu, Nelson and Christchurch, the company distributes its products via joinery merchants to the joinery and construction industry.

The company has a workforce of more than 300 people across the country that includes very experienced specification managers and sales account managers.

Supplier Information - Kopine

Kopine is a business unit of New Zealand Panels Group and has been New Zealand's leading manufacturer of particleboard since 1990.

Best known for its range of high quality particleboard flooring – Kopine Ultralock and Kopine Tongue & Groove, the company also provides a large quantity of particleboard used in melamine panels by NZ Panels’ Groups decorative surfaces brands - Bestwood and Prime Panels.

All raw material for the particleboard is untreated radiata pine sourced from local saw mills who buy their logs from sustainable forests.  Manufacturing particleboard presents the opportunity to turn a sawmilling by-product into a strong, quality product with a wide range of uses within the building industry.

Kopine is consistently looking for ways to improve manufacturing practices with a view to decreasing its environmental impact. A large portion of the energy consumed during the manufacturing of particleboard is generated by burning the dust created during the sanding process.

The company recycles its cardboard, paper and plastic and provides local farmers with waste wood chip for animal wintering pads, and donates wood chips to local schools and playcentres for playgrounds.

Application and Purpose

Kopine Flooring Systems are intended for use as flooring in residential buildings designed and constructed within the scope of NZS 3604:2011 Timber Framed Buildings. Kopine Flooring Systems are suitable for use as a flooring diaphragm within the scope of NZS 3604 and are Codemark compliant.

LIMITATIONS Where Kopine Flooring Systems are used outside the scope of NZS 3604 or where concentrated loads exceed 180 kg or uniformly distributed loads exceed 200kg/m2 a suitably qualified professional must be consulted.

Kopine Flooring Systems are suitable for residential flooring applications with a maximum frame spacing of 600mm centres for a maximum load of 1.8 kN live load. Live loads above 2.0kPa / 1.8 kN are required to be specifically designed using the properties table contained in the Kopine ‘Installation Guide and Technical Specifications’ for Ultralock™12 and Tongue & Groove12 Flooring.

Kopine Flooring may be exposed to weather for up to 12 weeks. However, during construction all effort must be made to prevent ponding of water on the surface. Protective membranes or coatings must not be used on the top or bottom of the floor while exposed to weather during construction. For full guidance and information for specifying and installing Kopine Flooring Systems, please refer to the online video or installation instructions for Ultralock™12 and Tongue & Groove12 Flooring on the Kopine website, or download the ‘Installation Guide and Technical Specifications’ document from the resources page of the website.

Installation and Maintenance

Make sure the panel edges are square, and free from dirt. Joists should be no wider than 600 mm centres – the closer the joists the more rigid the floor. The sheet must be a continuous span over at least three joists.

Whack some nails into the joist to guide your first panel into place.

Put a generous amount of glue on the joists underneath where you’ll lay your first panel. If you’re laying panels at a floor edge, this must be supported by blocking. (NOTE: You’ll need to allow for an 8mm expansion gap at the edge of any panel that’s going to collide with a masonry wall or other serious obstacle.)

Take a straight, square line from one corner of the floor and lay the first panel down this line, across the glued joists. Screw it down – 10mm in from the edge and at 150 mm centres along the short-edge of the sheets and around the floor edge.   For intermediate joists, use 200 mm centres. (Note: Completely fix sheets when you lay them down – corner fixing is shabby and not enough to hold the panels as the glue cures.)

Glue and fix the remaining panels. Lay sheets in a staggered, brick-like pattern with panels at right angles to the joists, making sure you glue all edges and the joists underneath. Apply a generous amount of glue (5mm diameter) right along all edges of the panel. The glue should squeeze out of the top of the joint when you push the next panel in to join up. (Note: Gorilla Grip adhesive works best in conditions above 10C though can be used down to 5C. If you move the panels apart after 15 minutes, you’ll need to put some fresh glue on before you rejoin them.)

Scrape off excess glue on the joint to leave a smooth surface. Don’t walk on the joints for a minimum of two hours after you’ve glued – especially if joists are at 600mm centres or in cold conditions. If you have to walk over it, lay planks across or walk across the joists only.
