Homestar™ is a comprehensive, national, voluntary residential rating tool that evaluates the environmental attributes of New Zealand's stand-alone homes, townhouses and apartments in terms of energy, health and comfort, water, waste and more. The rating is on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being very poor and 10 being world excellence). Many of the more problematic old kiwi homes sit in the 2-3 star region, so there is plenty of room for improvement.
With the introduction of a rating system homeowners are able to use Homestar™ to independently demonstrate true value of home performance attributes or any renovations/upgrades. As the market develops and demand increases, homes with a higher star rating will be able to sell for more money.
Homestar™ is a highly comprehensive tool that looks at many aspects within your home. You can do a preliminary self-assessment online (www.homestar.org.nz) to get an idea of where you sit, however you will need to engage the Services of a Homestar Practitioner and a Homestar Assessor if you want your home to be officially certified, demonstrating its environmental credentials to the market.
When thinking about having your house Homestar™ certified it is important to get the advice and support you need to make sure your project runs smoothly. Although the house cannot be officially certified until the work on site is complete, there are many items that need to be looked into upfront. The best time to engage your Homestar™ certified Practitioner or Homecoach™ is right at the start, when the house is still merely a concept idea in your head. Not only will the consultant be able to provide design advice to yourself and the architect, but he/she will also be able to point out the type of documentation you will need to collect as you go along to be able to validate your project at the end.
